Wooly Buggers are usually the first fly I'll try in a lake. I've tied this with a Bead Head to get down more quickly. I generally use lighter colors (Olive, Cinnamon) on bright sunny days, and darker colors (Purple, Black) on overcast cloudy days. I vary the retrieve until I find what the fish seem to want, from a rapid blast return, to a more sedate, 4-6 inch strips on the return. Sometimes I'll just troll the fly behind my float tube. It's also important to vary your depth. At times a floating line is appropriate when fish are shallow, or a sink tip when fish are mid-range (4 - 10 feet), or a full sink when I really need to get down. Experiment until you find the fish. |
