Damsel

The damsel hatch is one of those can't miss hatches each season. This pattern is tied with a short marabou tail, marabou wound body and black eyes, just like the natural. Damsels live in weedbeds in many mountain lakes and hatch as the water begins to warm slightly in the late Sping or early Summer. These nymphs must crawl out of the water to hatch, so they often swim just below the surface for significant distances before they find a stick, or bush or the shoreline to crawl out of the water. As a result, trout will prey on these insects with reckless abandon just under the surface. 50 fish + days are not uncommon when this hatch really is on. I usually fish this pattern with a dry line and work it in a slow jerky retrieve. If I can find a small island in a lake surrounded by weedbed, this is a prime location. I'll fish the shallows, sometimes in as little as 6 inches of water, especially if I see the fish tailing. Damsels can be pretty exciting!
