The Hare's ear is one of the most versatile nymphs and is effective in both rivers and lakes. It imitates a wide variety of mayfly and caddis nymphs. A number of year's ago I tried fishing this pattern tied on a size 8 hook for Steelhead in Oregon's Roque River. The guide I fished with that day thought I was nuts, but after 7 steelhead he changed his mind. Inasmuch as this was my first ever steelhead trip, little did I know that a 7 fish day was awesome. What I later found out is that the river was full of October caddis and my Hare's Ear pattern was an effective imitation. Sometimes luck has a lot to do with fishing! |
