My first experience fishing hoppers was memorable. I was on the Madison River in Montana and we were working up a grassy bank. My friend talked me into trying a hopper and WOW! I'd cast the fly right at the bank and usually try and land it within a foot, sometimes in just a few inches of water. The rises were incredible. Some were very delicate, like a trout sipping a midge, and some were savage. It was awesome to see a shadow emerge from the depths and slide right into the shallows and slam these hoppers. Once you've experienced a good hopper day, you'll always long for another! |
