Mayfly Spinners
A spinner fall is a fun time to be on the river. Quite commonly the morning's hatch becomes a spinner fall in the evening. A mayfly spinner is the final stage when the fly returns to the river, after shedding its exoskeleton, to deposit its eggs for the next cycle. A spinner pattern is usually one size smaller than the mayfly dun. If you fished a Pale Morning Dun in size 16 this morning, you'd want to try a size 18 Rusty Spinner this evening. Trout key in on spinners because the insect won't fly away before it's eaten. You can always tell trout are "on" spinners because the rises are the most delicate, and often the biggest fish make an almost imperceptable dimple as it rises to sip spinners.
